Topic: Similes

Objective/Aim: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to understand similes and able to use them. 

Tools/Materials: 
  • whiteboard and markers, 
  • textbook, 
  • handouts with exercises and examples

Teaching Method:
Activity 1: Warm-Up
Ask some questions to check students' previous knowledge about the topic. 

Activity 2:
Present the concept of the similes using visuals and examples. Explain that the similes are used to showing the difference between two things, for example - heavier than, stronger than. A simile is a comparison that uses the words 'like' or 'as'.
Examples:
(a) Her beauty is as fresh as a rose.
(b) The night sky was as dark as coal.
(c) Her words cut like a knife.

Activity 3: 
  • Give students handouts with exercises focusing on forming sentences using similes. 
  • Provide list of sentences, some of which include similes and others not. Ask them to identify similes and underline those.
  • Walk around the classroom to provide assistance and answer any questions.

Group Activity:
  • Divide the students into pairs. Ask each pair to write as many similes as they can.
  • Instruct them to use comparison to write sentences that are imaginative or personal.
  • Encourage creativity and collaboration among students.
Evaluation/Review: Ask for volunteers to share their sentences with the class. Provide feedback on accuracy and fluency, and address any common errors.
