Topic: Figures of Speech : Metaphor

Objective/Aim: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to understand metaphor and able to use them. 

Tools/Materials: 
  • whiteboard and markers, 
  • textbook, 
  • handouts with exercises and examples

Teaching Method:
Activity 1: Warm-Up
Ask some questions to check students' previous knowledge about the topic. 

Activity 2:
Present the concept of the metaphor using visuals and examples. Explain that a metaphor is a figure of speech that compares two unlike things by saying one is the other.
Examples:
(a) The world is a stage.
(b) She is a walking dictionary.
(c) His voice is music to ears.

Activity 3: 
  • Give students handouts with exercises focusing on forming sentences using metaphor. 
  • Provide list of sentences, some of which include metaphor and others not. Ask them to identify metaphors.
  • Walk around the classroom to provide assistance and answer any questions.

Group Activity:
  • Divide the students into pairs. Ask each pair to write a paragraph using at least one metaphor.
  • Instruct them to write sentences that are about people, emotions etc.
  • Encourage creativity and collaboration among students.
Evaluation/Review: Ask for volunteers to share their short paragraph with the class. Provide positive feedback on accuracy and fluency, and gently guide improvement and address any common errors.
