Topic: Phrasal Verbs

Objective/Aim: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to understand Phrasal Verbs and able to use them.

Tools/Materials:
  • whiteboard and markers,
  • textbook,
  • handouts with exercises and examples

Teaching Method:
Activity 1: Warm-Up
Ask some questions to check students' previous knowledge about the topic.

Activity 2:
Present the concept of phrasal verbs using visuals and examples. Explain that phrasal verbs are expressions where a verb is combined with a preposition or adverb (sometimes both), and they take on a new meaning that is different from the original verb.
Examples:
(a) Give up (to quit).
(b) Turn on (to activate)
(c) Will Look after (to take care of)

Activity 3:
  • Give students handouts with exercises focusing on phrasal verbs.
  • Include sentences where they have to identify the phrasal verbs to the correct meaning. (e.g. She had to turn down the job offer because salary was too low. Meaning of turn down: to reject) .
  • Walk around the classroom to provide assistance and answer any questions.

Group Activity:
  • Divide the students into groups (e.g. team of 3-4 students). Create a list of phrasal verbs and write them into different paper slips and distribute among groups.
  • Instruct them to create sentences using assigned phrasal verbs.
  • Encourage creativity and collaboration among students.
Evaluation/Review: Ask for volunteers to share their phrasal verbs with explanation and examples with the class. Provide feedback on accuracy and fluency, and address any common errors.
