Some people say that advertising encourages us to buy things we really do not need. Others say that advertisements tell us about new products that may improve our lives. Which viewpoint do you agree with?

Here's a sample IELTS Writing Task 2:

Advertising holds a strong influence over modern consumer society. While some say that it manipulates individuals into purchasing unnecessary things, others believe that it informs individuals of valuable products. I think that advertising does both, but more frequently, it tends to lead individuals towards unnecessary purchases rather than assisting them.

Secondly, advertising is intended to be convincing, tending to appeal more to people's feelings than their reason. Most firms hire celebrities, use flashy visuals, and slogans to make goods look preferable than they actually are which contaminate people's mind. For instance, a consumer might glance at an advert for a new smartphone and feel pressured into upgrading, even if their existing phone works quite well. Such psychological pressure tends to result in impulsive purchases of items people do not actually need.

On the other hand, advertising can be informational, particularly when it presents actually beneficial innovations. For example, advertisements for energy-efficient devices or new health equipment can inform consumers about choices that might benefit their lives or save them money in the long run. Nevertheless, such informational advertising is less frequent than purely sales-driven ads.

In summary, though advertisements sometimes promote useful products, I think that their main purpose is to generate desire and increase consumption, frequently for things that are not essential. Consequently, consumers should be careful and cautious when confronted with advertising, using informed decisions on the basis of requirement rather than whim.
