Topic: Figures of Speech : Oxymoron


Objective/Aim: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to understand oxymoron as figures of speech and able to use them. 

Tools/Materials: 
  • whiteboard and markers, 
  • textbook, 
  • handouts/worksheets with exercises and examples

Teaching Method:
Activity 1: Warm-Up
Ask some questions to check students' previous knowledge about the topic. 

Activity 2:
(a) Present the concept of the oxymoron using visuals and examples.
(b) Explain that oxymoron is a figure of speech where two contradictory terms are placed together for effect. Examples: bitter sweet, living dead, original copy, jumbo shrimp etc.
Examples:
(a) The comedian was seriously funny.
(b) She gave me the only choice.
(c) It was a small crowd at the concert.

Activity 3: 
  • Give students a worksheet or list of sentences and ask them to identify oxymoron. 
  • Ask students to explain identified oxymoron.
  • Walk around the classroom to provide assistance and answer any question.

Group Activity:
  • Divide the students into pairs. Ask each pair to write short sentences or a short paragraph.
  • Instruct them to brainstorm using a list of contradictory adjectives and nouns (e.g. "pain", "truth", "clear", "confuse" etc.).
  • Encourage students to incorporate accuracy and creativity in their writing.
Evaluation/Review: Ask students to share examples with the class. Provide positive feedback on understanding oxymoron, and gently guide improvement.
