Topic: Figures of Speech : Hyperbole


Objective/Aim: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to understand hyperbole as figures of speech and able to use them. 

Tools/Materials: 
  • whiteboard and markers, 
  • textbook, 
  • handouts/worksheets with exercises and examples

Teaching Method:
Activity 1: Warm-Up
Ask some questions to check students' previous knowledge about the topic. 

Activity 2:
(a) Present the concept of the hyperbole using visuals and examples.
(b) Explain that hyperbole is a figures of speech that uses exaggeration for emphasis or effect. It is not meant to be taken literally.
Examples:
(a) I have a mountain of homework. (exaggeration of amount of homework)
(b) She is so hungry that she could eat a horse. (exaggeration of hunger)

Activity 3: 
  • Give students a worksheet or list of sentences and ask them to identify hyperbole. 
  • Ask students to explain identified hyperbole.
  • Walk around the classroom to provide assistance and answer any question.

Group Activity:
  • Divide the students into pairs. Ask each pair to write short sentences or a short paragraph.
  • Instruct them to use hyperbole to emphasize feelings, create humour, or draw attention.
  • Encourage students to incorporate accuracy and creativity in their writing.
Evaluation/Review: Ask students to share examples with the class. Check use of hyperbole in students' sentences. Provide positive feedback on understanding hyperbole, and gently guide improvement.
