Topic: Idioms and Phrases

Objective/Aim: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to understand idioms and phrases and able to use them.

Tools/Materials:
  • whiteboard and markers,
  • textbook,
  • handouts/worksheets with exercises and examples

Teaching Method:
Activity 1: Warm-Up
Ask some questions to check students' previous knowledge about the topic.

Activity 2:
(a) Present the concept of idioms and phrases using visuals and examples.
(b) Explain that idioms are expressions whose meanings are not literal but instead are understood through common use. Phrases may have a literal meaning, while idioms always carry a figurative meaning.
Examples:
(a) Example of phrase: "Take a walk" (literal meaning: go for a walk).
(b) Example of idiom: "Take the bull by the horns" (figurative meaning: to take control of a situation).

Activity 3:
  • Give students a worksheet or list of sentences and ask them to identify idioms and phrases.
  • Ask students to explain identified idioms and phrases.
  • Walk around the classroom to provide assistance and answer any question.

Group Activity:
  • Divide the students into small groups. Give each group different idioms and phrases. Ask each group to share meaning according to their understanding.
  • After each group share their details then provide correct meanings and explain assigned idioms and phrases. (e.g. A piece of cake: something very easy to do; Under the weather: feeling ill)
Evaluation/Review: Ask students to share sentences using idioms and phrases with the class. Provide positive feedback on understanding, and gently guide improvement.
