A company has announced that it wishes to build a large factory near your community. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this new influence on your community. Do you support or oppose the factory? Explain your position.
Sample IELTS Writing Task 2 essay:
The huge factory a company intends to build near our community would present new opportunities as well as major concerns. The creation of new jobs is one enormous advantage. A huge factory will hire many locals, reducing unemployment and allowing families to become financially stable. As more people earn steady incomes, they will spend more in local shops and restaurants, boosting the overall economy.
Another positive impact could be the development of local infrastructure; a company or local government may upgrade roads, expand utilities, and improve public services to support factory operations. This would be beneficial in terms of transportation and overall quality of life for local residents. Small enterprises may also expand or develop because of new economic activity and an expanded customer base.
However, the adverse points of having a jumbo factory nearby are of major significance. Factories produce noise, pollution, and heavy traffic flow. Increased truck movement may lead to safety problems and the deterioration of roadways. Air or water pollution may damage the health and environment of the community. Furthermore, property values will go down due to which the homeowners will be at a loss. There is no guarantee that the factory may provide as many employments to the locals as they claim since several factories depend on automated systems.
Overall, I am against the construction of the factory. Economic benefits are attractive; however, they are disproportionately insignificant against the potential health and environmental damage. A community is supposed to be oriented toward long-term well-being and sustainable development. Instead of relying on heavy industry, we could attract cleaner, ecologically friendly businesses that offer jobs without harming the community. In such a way, we will protect our health, natural surroundings, and future prosperity.
