Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Businesses should do anything they can to make a profit. Use specific reasons and examples to support your position.

Sample IELTS Writing Task 2 essay:

I disagree with the statement that businesses should do anything they can to make a profit. While profitability is essential for the success of any business, ethical considerations, sustainability, and social responsibility should not be sacrificed in the pursuit of profit.

First, firms should consider their moral obligation to behave ethically despite the lure of possible profit maximization that may arise as a result of exploitative behaviours. For example, firms that are tempted to cut corners by paying low wages to employees or ignoring environment laws to save on costs can end up affecting society negatively as well as the company's future profits. For example, firms that exploit employees or the environment will eventually end up facing the wrath of the law and consequently losses.

Second, a company may find that its sole focus on maximizing profit may compromise its sustainability. Modern consumers in today’s world are learning to be aware of the ideals that stand behind the products they buy. The ideals of honest business practices, such as practices of fair trade, environmental friendliness, and openness, may, paradoxically, generate greater profits for a company.

Finally, businesses need to be aware of their impact on society. This is because businesses are very influential when it comes to the formation of values in society. Businesses must be seen to be working towards creating fairness, equity, and environmental respect within society even when the driving principle is profit maximization.

In conclusion, making a profit, as important as it is, should not result in a company sacrificing ethics, sustainability, or, more specifically, promoting well-being. Companies should find a balance between profits and good business practices.
