The full name of Mahatma Gandhi is Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. We also know him by the name of Father of the Nation and Bapu. Mahatma Gandhi was one of the greatest persons of his century. He was not only a great politician but also a great social and religious leader. He was a priest of truth, peace and non-violence. He had sacrificed everything for his country and countrymen. Mahatma Gandhi was born on 2 October 1869 in Porbandar, Gujarat. Every year, his birthday is celebrated as Gandhi Jayanti in India. His father's name is Karamchand and his mother's name is Putlibai. His wife's name is Kasturba Gandhi whom he married at the age of 13. His children are Harilal, Manilal, Ramdas and Devdas. After passing the matriculation examination, he moved to England to become a barrister.
After his return to India, Mahatma Gandhi started advocating in Bombay High Court but he did not get success in it. In 1913, he moved to South Africa, where he raised his voice against the atrocities on Indians by whites. He launched the Satyagraha movement to improve the condition of Indians and he did not sit in peace till the Indian Relief Act was passed.
In 1915, Gandhiji returned to India from South Africa and joined the Indian National Congress here. They used truth, non-violence and peace as weapons against the British government in India. And he started the Non-Cooperation Movement in the year 1920, the Civil Disobedience Movement in the year 1930 and the British Quit India Movement in the year 1942 to attain full Swaraj. He also went to jail many times for all these protests. Indians won after many such tireless efforts, and in the year 1947, India gained independence from the British government.
On January 30, 1948, Gandhiji was shot dead by Nathuram Godse at Birla Bhavan in New Delhi. Gandhiji was truly the light of the world, he showed the path of love, truth and non-violence to India and the world. He was known for his ideals throughout his life and even after his life, he will be known in the same way. India and her freedom will always remember Gandhiji as the father of the nation.
